Mladá Boleslav, 20 January 2025 – Spectator safety during special stages is a top priority at every FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) event. To raise even more awareness about this crucial aspect of the sport, Škoda Motorsport has created a series of four videos to showcase the behind-the-scenes efforts that make each rally safe and enjoyable for on-location spectators.
As an active participant in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), Škoda Motorsport fully supports all initiatives aimed at improving spectator safety. Unlike closed-circuit racing, rallies held on open roads require a significantly more complex approach to managing spectator behaviour. In this unique video series, Škoda Motorsport highlights key elements of the safety measures implemented at WRC events.
The first video focuses on the marshals, who play a vital role in ensuring safety. These dedicated volunteers identify the safest viewing spots and monitor spectators along the entire stage. Another video offers insights into the role of FIA WRC Safety Delegate Michèle Mouton, the only female driver to have won a WRC event. The runner-up in the 1982 WRC standings served as FIA Safety Delegate for 15 years before retiring at the end of the 2024 season. Thirty minutes before the first competitor begins, the safety delegate drives each stage to conduct a final safety inspection. A stage is only opened for rally cars once their approval has been granted.
The third video takes viewers behind the scenes of rally control, highlighting the responsibilities of the safety crew. High-definition cameras onboard the rally cars, provided by the WRC Promoter, transmit real-time footage to Rally Control. FIA Deputy WRC Safety Delegate Nicolas Klinger, a former world-class co-driver, monitors the action on several screens alongside police officers and the Head of Marshals. They can quickly alert the marshals responsible for a specific section via radio to address any issues promptly.
The fourth video offers fans practical advice on how to enjoy the rally action safely, emphasising the golden rules for spectator safety. Spectator safety is also crucial for rally drivers, enabling them to focus entirely on their performance, which ultimately delivers the best possible experience for the audience.
